About Litecoin (LTC)

Litecoin is the name of both a cryptocurrency and the decentralized blockchain network on which it transacts. The protocol borrows much of Bitcoin's source code but has a larger total supply, shorter block times and a different hashing algorithm. Launched in October 2011, just three years after Satoshi Nakamoto published Bitcoin's white paper, Litecoin is one of the earliest public blockchain networks. Unlike many later cryptocurrencies, its design does not stray far from Bitcoin's. Litecoin uses proof-of-work to arrive at consensus among nodes. The network's miners must solve a computationally intensive task to determine which can add the next block of transactions to the Litecoin blockchain. Miners receive LTC coins as part of a block reward when they add transactions that abide by network rules. The network rejects blocks containing invalid transactions, and the dishonest miner forfeits their reward. One of the most significant differences between Litecoin and Bitcoin is the hashing algorithm. Instead of Bitcoin's SHA-256, Litecoin uses an algorithm called Scrypt. Scrypt was chosen because its initial resistance to high-powered ASIC mining hardware would encourage greater decentralization of Litecoin mining. However, ASICs capable of hashing with Scrypt have been developed, rendering GPU miners obsolete. Litecoin also has a history of implementing upgrades much faster than Bitcoin. Since both networks share very similar code, it has served as a sort of live testnet for the longer-running cryptocurrency. For example, Litecoin introduced the scaling protocols SegWit and Lightning Network months before Bitcoin.

Litecoin FAQ
How do you mine Litecoin?

Litecoin mining requires special hardware called an application-specific integrated circuit, or ASIC.

ASICs are computer chips designed to do one task incredibly well. Although the network's hashing algorithm was implemented to stop ASICs from dominating the network, ASICs optimized for hashing with Scrypt have since been developed.

If you already have a Scrypt ASIC, head over to the OKEx Mining Pool. Mining as part of a pool decreases your profit variance by generating a consistent flow of newly mined LTC.

How much is Litecoin worth?

The Litecoin price is a function of varying demand. With growing Litecoin adoption as both a medium of exchange and a store of value, the LTC price has increased.

As part of an entirely new asset class, demand for Litecoin constantly varies. Changes in demand against a fixed supply determined by the protocol create volatility in the LTC price. The potential profitability of timing buys and sells with market moves makes cryptocurrencies like LTC very popular with traders.

Should I invest in Litecoin?

Investing in Litecoin and other cryptocurrencies is increasingly popular. However, that doesn't mean it's without risk. Before you invest in any asset, you should carefully weigh the risks against the potential rewards.

Is Litecoin a good investment?

Since its 2011 launch, Litecoin's market cap has risen into the billions of dollars. Increasing crypto adoption among merchants and investors creates demand and pushes the price up.

Litecoin provides hard monetary assurances, similar to Bitcoin, while allowing for faster and cheaper transactions. It also serves as a testing ground for innovations that often find themselves integrated into Bitcoin.
